Mount Softball Begins Crucial Three-Game Home Series with Quinnipiac with Friday Doubleheader

MOUNT UPDATE:  The Mount split a doubleheader at Siena on Tuesday, posting a 5-0 victory in game two after dropping the opener, 3-0.  Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck tossed a four-hit shutout while Avery Dinges belted a three-run homer to pace the Mount in the game two victory.  Dinges leads the Mount with a .378 average, 33 runs scored, 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 18 RBI and 37 stolen bases.  Gina Del Giorno is hitting .359 with 13 steals and a .413 on-base percentage.  In the circle, Zagrodnicheck is 4-7 with a team-best 2.82 ERA in 77.0 innings while Ellie Meier (6-5, 3.36 ERA, 64.2 IP) and Sophia Schmehl (4-6, 3.71 ERA, 68.0 IP) are also having good seasons in the circle.

ABOUT THE BOBCATS:  Quinnipiac enters the weekend series with an 18-16 overall record and a 13-9 mark in the MAAC after being swept by Marist in a three-game MAAC series last weekend.  Quinnipiac is 3-8 in MAAC games after going 10-1 in MAAC play to start the season.  Sofia Vega leads the Bobcats with a .430 average while Kennedy DeMott is hitting .354 with a team-high four home runs and 28 RBI.  Quinnipiac is hitting .315 on the season with eight players hitting .282 or better.  Shannon Kendall leads the pitching staff with a 12-11 record and a 4.74 ERA, having started 23 of the team's 34 games this year.  Laney Adie is 5-4 with a 5.25 ERA in nine starts.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Quinnipiac holds a 26-12 lead in the all-time series with the Mountaineers.  The majority the meetings came when the Mount the two teams were members of the Northeast Conference.  The Mount is 2-6 against the Bobcats in MAAC regular season matchups since joining the conference.  Last year, Quinnipiac swept the three-game series in Hamden, Conn., winning each game by one run (3-2, 4-3, 4-3).  The Mount is 7-10 all-time at home against Quinnipiac.

WHERE WE STAND:  Mount St. Mary's is currently in eighth place in the MAAC standings with an 11-10 league mark, one game behind sixth-place Rider for the final MAAC playoff spot.  The top six teams in the regular season advance to the MAAC Championships, which will be hosted at the top seed on May 6-9.  The race for the final spots in the championships is tight as Quinnipiac is in fourth with a 13-9 mark, Sacred Heart fifth at 14-10, Rider is in sixth with a 12-9 record, Iona seventh at 12-10 and the Mount eighth at 11-10.  The Mount closes the regular season out with the three-game series against Quinnipiac, and a three-game set at Rider on May 1-2.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Avery Dinges is tied for second in the nation with 37 stolen bases with Louisville's Chelsea Mack, just one behind national leader Kirman Bailey of Dayton.The 37 steals are two shy of matching Bridgette Gilliano's school record of 39 set during the 2022 campaign.Dinges is now fourth all-time at the Mount with 53 career steals.
  • Gina Del Giorno leads the Mount with 13 multiple-hit games this season.The senior is hitting .359 on the season while starting all 42 games.She had a 13-game hit streak earlier in the year, and is 4-for-10 (.400) over the past three games.
  • Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck tossed a four-hit shutout in the Mount's 5-0 victory over Siena in her last outing.The freshman is 2-2 with a save and a 0.85 ERA over her past six appearances.She has struck out 23 batters over 33 innings during that span, holding the opposition to just 16 hits and a .151 batting average.
  • Ellie Meier is 3-2 with a 1.62 ERA over her past five outings, holding the opposition to a .213 average over 26 innings of work.
  • The Mount has a 2.33 ERA in MAAC games this year while holding opponents to a .226 average.The trio of Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck (3-4, 2.27 ERA), Ellie Meier (5-3, 2.35 ERA) and Sophia Schmehl (3-3, 2.39 ERA) have logged all of the Mount's innings in league play.
  • The Mount leads the MAAC with 83 stolen bases this season, 15 more than second place Manhattan (68).
UP NEXT:  The Mount closes out the regular season with another key MAAC series, heading to Rider for a three-game set.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, May 1, at 2:00 p.m. and close out the series with a single game on Saturday, May 2, at noon.
