Walk Off Caps Senior Day Split for Mount Softball

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 26, 2026)--Gina Del Giorno's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave Mount St. Mary's a split of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader with Quinnipiac on Senior Day at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Sunday.  The Bobcats took the opening game, 5-1, before the Mount earned a 4-3 win on the Del Giorno walk-off in the nightcap.  The Mount is now 17-28 overall and 12-12 in the MAAC with a three-game road series at Rider remaining on the schedule.

Quinnipiac 5, Mount St. Mary's 1

A tight game through five innings slipped away from Mount St. Mary's in the sixth, as Quinnipiac used a three-run frame to pull away for a 5-1 victory.

The Mount struck first in the opening inning. Gina Del Giorno worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and came around to score on Avery Dinges' RBI single to give Mount St. Mary's an early 1-0 advantage.

Quinnipiac answered in the second, capitalizing on defensive miscues. The Bobcats scored twice in the inning—both runs unearned—to take a 2-1 lead despite recording just two hits in the frame.

From there, pitching and defense kept the game within reach. The Mount scattered hits but couldn't find the timely knock, leaving at least one runner on base in four consecutive innings from the second through the fifth.

The decisive moment came in the top of the sixth. Quinnipiac loaded the bases with the help of two errors before Mary Fogg delivered a two-run double to left-center. A sacrifice groundout added another run, all unearned, extending the lead to 5-1.
Mount St. Mary's threatened in the bottom half of the sixth, loading the bases with one out on singles from Sharon Manni and Payten De Weese along with a walk by Janie Lofland. However, Quinnipiac escaped the jam with a fielder's choice and a foul out to end the inning.

The Mount put a runner on in the seventh but could not mount a comeback.

Quinnipiac finished with nine hits, while Mount St. Mary's collected seven. The Mount's defense proved costly, committing four errors that led to all five Quinnipiac runs being unearned.

Del Giorno paced the Mount offense with two hits and a run scored, while Dinges drove in the team's lone run.  Ellie Meier allowed five unearned runs while striking out five in a complete-game effort.

Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 4, Quinnipiac 3

Mount St. Mary's capitalized on Quinnipiac miscues and delivered late, walking off the Bobcats for a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the doubleheader.

The Mount struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of an error to push across an unearned run. Gina Del Giorno led off with a single, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, and eventually came home on a groundout by Courtney Chew for a 1-0 lead.

Mount added to its advantage in the second inning, again aided by defensive mistakes. After putting runners on, a throwing error allowed Del Giorno to score, and another miscue moments later brought Avery Dinges home, stretching the lead to 3-0—all three runs unearned.

Quinnipiac responded in the third, scoring twice in a chaotic inning that featured three Mount errors. The Bobcats added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Mary Fogg to even the score at 3-3.

From there, both teams settled in defensively. The Mount threatened in the fifth and sixth innings, collecting five hits across the two frames, but couldn't break through.

The breakthrough finally came in the bottom of the seventh. Sharon Manni drew a leadoff walk, and Janie Lofland reached on a bunt that turned into an error, putting runners at second and third. After Quinnipiac worked out a key out at the plate, Del Giorno delivered the game-winning hit—a single to left field that scored Lofland and sealed the 4-3 win.

Sofia Schmehl picked up the complete-game victory, striking out three while allowing one earned run in seven innings.  Del Giorno went 2-for-5 with the walk-off RBI while Dinges was 2-for-3 at the plate in the victory.

NOTES
  • Dinges stole third base and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Mount a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game two.  Dinges now has 39 stolen bases this season, matching the school record set by Bridgette Gilliano in 2022.  Dinges is now tied for the national lead in steals with Louisville's Chelsea Mack.
  • The Mount is now in eighth place in the MAAC standings with a 12-12 record with the top six teams earning a spot at the MAAC Championships.  Rider and Sacred Heart are tied for sixth with a 14-10 mark, with the Mount two games back with three games to play.
  • Del Giorno went 4-for-9 at the plate for the Mount in the two games, and is now hitting .360 on the year.  She leads the team with 15 multiple-hit games.
  • The Mount honored seniors Del Giorno, Lia Festa, Tristin Koerner and Payten De Weese prior to the first game of the doubleheader.  All four players recorded at least one hit on the day.

UP NEXT:  The Mount closes the regular season at Rider, playing a doubleheader on May 1 and a single game on May 2.
