Mount Softball Hosts Sacred Heart for Key MAAC Series This Weekend

MOUNT UPDATE:  Mount St. Mary's is coming off a 7-5 win at George Mason on Wednesday afternoon.  The Mount scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie and earn the victory.   Avery Dinges (.408, 29 R, 13 2B, 32 SB), Gina Del Giorno (.369, 19 R, 12 SB) and Sharon Manni (.329, 8 SB) have led the offense this season.  The trio of Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck (3-6, 3.32 ERA, 59.0 IP), Sophia Schmehl (4-5, 3.50 ERA, 64.0 IP) and Ellie Meier (5-4, 3.73 ERA, 50.2 IP) pace the pitching staff.

ABOUT SACRED HEART:  Sacred Heart dropped both games at home in a doubleheader with Rhode Island on Wednesday.  The Pioneers are now 15-26 overall and 10-9 in the MAAC this season.   Sam Kowalski, who has been out of the lineup the past five games, is the team's best hitter (.396, 8 HR, 21 RBI) and pitcher (11-9, 2.09 ERA, 130 K, 137.0 IP).  Ellie Leckrone (.317, 11 2B, 17 RBI) is also hitting above .300 while Nicole Henke has five home runs.  Emily Heath (3-11, 5.32 ERA,102.2 IP) and Emily Campion (1-5, 7.06 ERA, 37.2 IP) round out the pitching staff.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  This will be the 52nd all-time meeting between the Mount and Sacred Heart with the Pioneers holding a 27-24 lead in the series.  This will be the first time the two teams will meet in MAAC play as the two did not play last year in Sacred Heart's first season in the league.  The Mount has won the last five meetings in the all-time series, including a three-game sweep at Sacred Heart in 2022 when the two squads were members of Northeast Conference.  The Mount has won 15 of the past 21 matchups between the two teams.  Mount St. Mary's is 14-14 all-time at home against the Pioneers, including taking three of four games in a four-game set the last time the teams played at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in 2021.

DINGES ENJOYING BREAKOUT SEASON:  Junior second baseman Avery Dinges is having a breakout season for the Mountaineers, leading the team with a .408 average, 29 runs, 13 doubles, four triples and 32 stolen bases.  She is currently tied for third in the nation with her 32 steals while she leads the MAAC in both steals and doubles (13).  Dinges has the second most steals in a season with her 32 this year, seven shy of matching Bridgette Gilliano's school record of 39 steals set in 2022 while her 13 doubles are four shy of tying the school mark of 17 held by Amanda Burk (2006) and Lindsay Heinze (2017).

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Mount St. Mary's is currently in sixth place in the MAAC standings with a 9-7 league record, just ahead of Rider (10-8) and Sacred Heart (10-9).The top six teams in the regular season advance to the MAAC Championships which will be held May 6-9 at the home of the regular season champion.
  • The Mount leads the MAAC by a wide margin with 75 stolen bases this year, 24 ahead of Manhattan's 51.
  • Avery Dinges is 5-for-7 (.714) with two doubles, a triple and three stolen bases over the past three games.Dinges is hitting .444 (20-of-45) over the past 14 games with 14 runs, seven doubles, four triples and 13 steals.
  • Gina Del Giorno is hitting .460 (29-for-63) over her past 21 games with 11 runs scored and seven RBI.She is 5-for-12 (.417) over the past four contests
  • Sharon Manni has also been hot at the plate, hitting .472 (17-for-36) over the past 14 games with eight runs scored and five steals.
  • Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck is 2-1 with a 0.47 ERA over her last three appearances, striking out nine while allowing just seven hits in 15 innings of work
  • Ellie Meier is 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA over her past four games, allowing four earned runs in 17 innings.
  • Sophia Schmehl has also been hot in the circle, going 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA over her past four games, striking out 18 in 26 innings.
