Mount St. Mary’s Men’s Tennis Closes Regular Season with Strong Performance in Win at Marist, Eyes MAAC Championships Next

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (April 15, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's tennis closed out its regular season in thrilling fashion on Tuesday, grinding out a 4-3 road victory over Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. The win lifts the Mount to a 13-6 overall record and 5-3 in MAAC play, solidifying third place in the conference standings as they await final results across the league to determine their postseason seeding.

Doubles play proved crucial in the Mountaineers' victory. At No. 1 doubles, Akarsh Gaonkar and Alexi Roy picked up a 6-4 win over Ian Layton and Nick Suhanitski, while Aaron Thompson and Ryan Wagner delivered a convincing 6-2 win at No. 3 to clinch the opening point. Marist managed a victory at No. 2, with Gregor Heinemann and Jose Catala defeating Filippos Zachiotis and Lucas Evans, 6-2.

In singles, the match remained tight throughout. Roy battled back after dropping the first set to take a dramatic three-set victory over Augustin Damonte at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Zachiotis was dominant at No. 3, earning a straight-set win over Heinemann, 6-3, 6-2. Wagner sealed the team victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Fateh Singh.

Marist earned singles points at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5, with Catala, Anirudh Nallaparaju, and Layton each collecting wins to keep the Red Foxes in striking distance.

With the regular season now complete, Mount St. Mary's will turn its attention to the MAAC Championships. Final seeding will be determined following the conclusion of the remaining matches across the league. The MAAC Championships will be held April 25-27 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
