West Windsor, N.J. (April 25, 2025)—No. 4 seed Mount St. Mary's saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to No. 5 seed Niagara in the First Round of the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at the Mercer County Tennis Center on Friday morning. The Mountaineers finished the season with a 13-7 record.
Niagara (8-10) took the doubles point to grab the early 1-0 advantage in the match. Trevor Masi and Jose Maria Garcia Uribe downed
Ryan Wagner and
Aaron Thompson, 6-2, at the No. 3 doubles position while Tanner Bedard and Vid Maric clipped the Mount's
Akarsh Gaonkar and
Alexi Roy, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. The Mount's
Filippos Zachiotis and
Lucas Evans led at No. 2 doubles, 5-3, when the match was clinched.
In singles play, Garcia Uribe downed Thompson, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 position with Makkar downed
Ryan Wagner, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 to give the Purple Eagles a 3-0 lead. The Mount got a point back when Roy defeated Masi, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles. The Purple Eagles clinched the match when Bedard downed Gaonkar in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). Zachiotis led at No. 2 singles while Evans was trailing at No. 3 singles when their matches were stopped.
NOTES:
- The Mount's 13 wins this season are the most by a Mountaineer team since the 2012-13 team went 15-7.
- The 13 wins are also tied for the fourth-most in a season since the Mountaineers moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.
- Zachiotis finishes his Mount career with 56 singles wins, fourth on the Mount's all-time career list.He added 66 career doubles wins, good for third all-time at the Mount.
- This was the Mount's first appearance at the MAAC Tennis Championships since joining the conference in 2022-23.
- Mount St. Mary's edged Niagara, 4-3, at home in the regular season matchup.
