EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 12, 2025) – Making their third appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, Mount St. Mary's competes against Marist in the quarterfinals.
MOUNT UPDATES & NOTES
- Mount St. Mary's has moved up two spots in the conference standings every year since joining the league in 2022-23. The team began their MAAC journey in eighth and were sixth last year.
- Entering the MAAC tournament, the Mount is seeking their sixth Division I title and 12th NCAA Tournament appearance between Divisions I and II.
- Three members of the team received All-MAAC and All-Rookie accolades on Monday. Jo Raflo was named to the All-MAAC First Team, Anna LeMaster was on Third Team, and Gabrielle Kennerly was All-Rookie.
- In the regular season finale, the Mountaineers defeated Marist in Poughkeepsie by the final of 61-50. LeMaster led with 15 points, and Giana Hoddinott contributed 11. Raflo tied a career high in rebounding with 12. The two sides were even in terms of scoring for their two meetings this year, as Marist won a December game 61-50, giving each team 111 points against the other.
- Raflo hit a second quarter bucket to achieve 1,000 career points as a member of the Mount. She is the 31st player in program history to cross the threshold, and the sixth to do it in three seasons.
- The Mount overcame their largest deficit to earn the win over the Red Foxes as they trailed at one junction by 16 points. Down 25-9 in the first half, the team went on a 36-6 run to go up 45-31 by the third quarter.
SCOUTING MARIST
- Marist made a significant bounce back from an 11th place finish a year ago to also clinch the first round bye for the MAAC Championship. Entering the postseason at 16-14, the Red Foxes guaranteed themselves a winning record for the first time since the COVID year of 2020-21, when they went 18-4 and won the league.
- The Red Foxes finished 11-9 in MAAC play and come in riding a two-game losing streak as they completed the regular season falling to the Mount and Merrimack.
- Last Saturday, Morgan Lee scored 15 points to lead her team in the loss to the Mountaineers. The junior has 12.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season.
- Lexie Tarul is the main three-point threat with 67 makes this year but the Mount held the junior to one triple in their last meeting. Jackie Piddock did hit her average for assists with four and grabbed and set a career high for rebounds with nine.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Going back to 1990, the Mount and Marist have 24 previous meetings. Mount St. Mary's holds a 18-6 series lead, but that was due to in large part to a fantastic stretch in the 1990s when the two squads were Northeast Conference foes. Since joining the MAAC, it is Marist who has the 4-3 series advantage.
The two teams also met in the 2024 conference tournament – a 60-47 Mountaineers victory. This will be the third postseason meeting between the teams – the Mount also won the 1993 NEC Championship against the Red Foxes.
