HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 5, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's and women's tennis programs earned several key victories over the weekend at the MAAC Masters, hosted by Quinnipiac and Fairfield. Stefanos Pournaropoulous and Alexi Roy advanced to the doubles quarterfinals for the men, while Venus Tang and Bella Pescatore each earned comeback singles wins to highlight the Mount's women's performances.
On the men's side, Pournaropoulous posted a 6-4, 6-2 opening-round singles win over Niagara's Damian Janiszewski before falling in a tight two-set match to Quinnipiac's Carlos Braun-Simo. Roy also battled into a match tiebreak before dropping a close decision to Fairfield's Kostas Kollias, 6-1, 4-6 (10-6).
In doubles play, Pournaropoulous and Roy earned back-to-back wins to reach the quarterfinals, topping Siena's Mars Argun and Matteo Castellazzi 6-1 and edging Rider's Axel Engstrom and M. Froberg Dahlin 7-6 before bowing out against Quinnipiac's Carl Sjoholm and Alessandro Sciacca 6-3.
For the Mount women, Tang outlasted Marist's Yasmin Asnis in a thriller, winning 6-1, 6-7 (11-9), while Pescatore rallied from a set down to defeat Niagara's Maria Melo 1-6, 7-5 (10-6). Both fell in their second-round matches against Fairfield and Rider, respectively, to conclude a strong weekend of competition.
The tournament provided valuable experience for both Mount squads as they continue their fall schedules. Mount St. Mary's returns to action later this month at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships.
