Men's Tennis Faces Top Seeded Marist in MAAC Semifinals on Saturday

MOUNT UPDATE:  Mount St. Mary's enters the MAAC Tournament with an 8-12 overall record with a 5-3 mark in the MAAC.  The Mount finished in a three-way tie for third place in the MAAC standings with Quinnipiac and Fairfield, and earned the No. 4 seed via the team's win over Fairfield during the regular season.  Stefanos Pournaropoulos earned Second Team All-MAAC honors in singles play, going 14-9 overall and 6-1 against MAAC opponents.  Alexi Roy (9-11, 4-1 MAAC) was a Third Team All-MAAC selection while Ryan Wagner went 12-8 overall and 5-2 against MAAC foes in singles.

ABOUT THE RED FOXES:  Marist went 14-5 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the MAAC during the regular season to capture the No. 1 seed and the MAAC regular season title.   Jose Catala earned All-MAAC Singles First Team recognition, while freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez and sophomore Anirudh were named to the Second Team.

 THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Marist holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with the Mount, including 4-1 win at the Mount in mid March.  This will be the first time the two teams will play in a conference tournament.  All four matchups in the series have come in MAAC regular season play.

FIRST MEETING (MARIST 4, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 1):  Marist defeated the Mount, 4-1, in Emmitsburg, Md., on March 14. The Red Foxes took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.  In singles play, Stefanos Pournaropoulos earned the Mount's point with a straight set win at No. 2 singles.  Marist won at No. 1 singles (Jose Catala def. Akarsh Gaonkar, 6-2, 7-6), No. 5 singles (Thomas Bevan def. Nikos Makris (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and No. 6 singles Gregor Heinemann def. Alessio Guarino (7-6, 7-6).

THE MOUNT AND THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS:  Mount St. Mary's joined the MAAC in 2022-23, and this is the second time the team has earned a spot at the MAAC Tennis Championships in the Mount's four years in the league.  Last year, the Mount earned the No. 4 seed, but was defeated by No. 5 seed Niagara, 4-1, in the MAAC Quarterfinals.  The Mount was a 33-year member of the NEC from 1989-2022, and posting a 7-23 record at the NEC Tennis Championships.  The Mount went 1-5 in the NEC semifinal round, last appearing the semifinals at the 2021 NEC Championships.  The Mount is 3-5 all-time in conference tournaments as the No. 4 seed, including an 0-1 mark as a member of the MAAC.

THREE MOUNTAINEERS EARN ALL-MAAC HONORS:  Three Mountaineers were named to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Conference teams, announced Thursday by the league office. In singles, Stafanos Pournaropoulos was named Second Team All-MAAC while Alexi Roy garnered Third Team All-MAAC honors.  In doubles, Pournaropoulos and Nikos Makris were named Third Team All-MAAC as well.

UP NEXT:  The winner of Friday's semifinal match will advance to the MAAC Championship match to face the winner of No. 2 Rider and No. 3 Quinnpiac on Sunday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m.
