EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 23, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball has some work to do to earn a home playoff game in the Northeast Conference tournament. The first test comes Thursday as Sacred Heart comes to town.
THE MATCHUP
Sacred Heart has taken most of the meetings over Mount St. Mary's, making this series the most lopsided margin of any NEC series for the Mount in the negative direction. The Pioneers have won 35 of 44 contests.
The Mount has worked to inch back in the series, including a victory against SHU in January.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Defeats on the road at St. Francis Brooklyn and Long Island knocked the Mountaineers out of the running for the top two spots in the NEC standings. Two places remain for a home playoff game, and the Mount primarily battles Wagner, LIU and Saint Francis U for those positions. Only one of the teams – the Red Flash of SFU – will face the Mount as the season concludes.
Aryna Taylor led the Mount in scoring with 13 points against the Sharks and
Kayla Agentowicz secured a career-high in rebounds with nine.
Kendall Bresee led in the Terriers game with 18 points, followed by Taylor with 14 more.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart has plenty of motivation coming into this weekend's games. At 6-9, the Pioneers have an outside chance at a home playoff game, although they need plenty of help to get there. On the reverse side, they stand one game ahead of Bryant for the play-in game between the NEC's eighth and ninth seeds.
Sonia Smith leads SHU in points (13.0 PPG), assists (4.5 APG) and steals (1.7 SPG). Kelsey Wood is the leading rebounds at 5.8 boards per game.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's welcomes Central Connecticut Saturday (Feb. 26) for their final regular season home game of the season. The Mount honors
Tess Borgosz, Agentowicz and Bresee before tip-off.
