EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 20, 2022) – A 3-1 homestand helped Mount St. Mary's women's basketball reach fifth place in the Northeast Conference standings. The challenges continue as they take to the road, beginning with a trip to face Sacred Heart.

THE MATCHUP

The Pioneers are one of two NEC schools to have a winning record all-time against the Mountaineers, and by far the most decisive. Out of the 43 previous meetings, Sacred Heart captured 35 of them.

Mount St. Mary's has worked hard to counteract that imbalance, including series splits the past two years. With both games played in Fairfield due to COVID doubleheaders, the Mount won the first game 84-60, as Michaela Harrison led a balanced effort with 15 points. Five players ended up registering double figures in scoring.

MOUNTAINEER REPORT

Wins over Long Island, Bryant and Merrimack netted the Mount their three victories during the home stretch. Their lone defeat came in a three-point loss to St. Francis Brooklyn. The Mountaineers stand two games back in the NEC standings, trailing 5-1 Fairleigh Dickinson and three teams at 4-2 – Brooklyn, Wagner and Sacred Heart.

Harrison broke the school's three-point mark with the first play of Monday's win over Merrimack. With that hurdle now cleared, the team turns to the next milestone on the horizon – Kendall Bresee reaching 1,000 career points. The graduate student stands 83 away, combining her Mount St. Mary's and George Washington totals.

Bresee took home her second NEC Player of the Week award for her efforts over the two games this past weekend. She now leads the conference in scoring at 15.4 points per game, and is third in both rebounding and assists.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS

Sacred Heart has logged wins over Bryant and Central Connecticut plus two forfeits. Averaging 61.4 points a contest, the Pioneers boast a pair of double-digit scorers. Sonia Smith leads her team in several categories, including scoring, assists and steals. Adrianne Hagood remains a presence with 12.5 points per game in eight appearances.

One thing the Pioneers do well is limit opponents from three-point range. On the season, their competitors shoot 24.4 percent, with many shooting under 20 percent.

LOOKING AHEAD

The road trip to Connecticut shifts to New Britain on Sunday (Jan. 23), when the Mount battles the Central Connecticut Blue Devils.
