Baltimore, Md. (September 26, 2021)--The Mount St. Mary's tandem of
Filippos Zachiotis and
Jarrett Karnibad lost in the championship match at the Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational on Sunday. Also for the Mountaineers, the pair of
Elliot Stevens and
Giovanni Abriola won the third-place match.
Zachiotis and Karnibad lost to a pair from Johns Hopkins, 3-0, in the finals in the format that featued a doubles matchup and then a pair of singles matches. The Mount lost the doubles point, 6-3, to fall behind, 1-0. Zachiotis was edged in his singles match, 4-6, 7-5 (10-7) while Karnibad lost in straight sets.
In the third-place matchup, Stevens and Abriola posted a 2-1 victory over Adila and Burrer from Johns Hopkins. The pair opened the matchup by winning the doubles point, 6-4. Stevens lost his singles match, 6-2, 6-4, to Adila, but Abriola clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Burrer.
The Mount men return to the courts on October 14-17 at the ITA Regionals hosted by the US Naval Academy.
