Box Score Buies Creek, N.C. (August 29, 2021)--A late three-goal outburst doomed the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team in a 4-1 loss at Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
Hannah Cooksey tallied her first goal of the season in the game while goalkeeper
Maggie Barron made 10 saves in the game.
Campbell, the defending Big South champions, broke out on top when Alyssa Nowowieski connected on a shot from 20 yards out for a 1-0 advantage. The Mount fought back on a beautiful pass from
Elisabeth Rockhill that set up Cooksey for the goal. Rockhill threaded a long pass between the two center backs to Cooksey, who buried the shot to even the score in 32
nd minute. The teams would head to the locker room tied at the half.
In the second half, Cooksey had a chance to put the Mount ahead in the 51
st minute, but saw her shot go high. Barron then came up with a pair of saves on Nowowieski in the 57
th minute to preserve the 1-1 tie. The Fighting Camels (1-1-1) broke through in the 67
th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick to take the lead. Amber Liston crossed the ball to the middle where Jessica Donald headed home the score for the go-ahead goal.
Campbell sealed the win with a pair of late goals for the 4-1 win. In the 84th minute, Donald headed home a corner kick for a 3-1 lead, and she then set up Emma Bushee for a goal a minute later to round out the scoring.
Campbell held a 30-to-5 shot advantage in the game, including a 14-to-3 edge in shots on goal. Barron made 10 saves to keep the Mount in the game. The Camels had a 9-to-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Mount returns to action on Friday, September 3
rd, with a home game against Bucknell at 7:00 p.m.
