EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 13, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball looks to continue their undefeated start to Northeast Conference (NEC) play as they challenge Sacred Heart in a doubleheader this week in Connecticut.
The games feature the NEC's preseason favorites. Mount St. Mary's was the unanimous first place favorite and Sacred Heart was picked second.
Initially planned for January 28
th and 29
th, the series was moved up two weeks to accommodate gaps in both teams' schedules. Opponents originally scheduled for this week are on pause as they follow NCAA COVID-19 protocols.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Sacred Heart is one of the Mount's tougher historical opponents. Since the series began in 2000, the Pioneers have won 34 out of 41 meetings. That includes 33 of the last 36 contests.
One of the Mount's three wins since 2002, and one of seven overall wins in the series, came last season. Thanks in large measure to a double-double and seven blocks from
Rebecca Lee, Mount St. Mary's left Fairfield with a 67-58 win. The victory was the second in what would be a nine-game win streak for the Mount.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
The Mountaineers swept St. Francis Brooklyn at Knott Arena to open NEC play last week. After a 76-68 victory on Thursday, the team grinded out a 65-59 win Friday. Mount rallied from a six point halftime deficit, and held the Terriers without a field goal for the final five minutes of the game.
Senior
Kendall Bresee registered two double-doubles, and came within four assists of a triple-double on Thursday. With a 19 point, 10.5 rebound average, she was honored by the NEC as their Player of the Week on Thursday. Bresee now leads the Mount in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Mount St. Mary's is going for their second straight 3-0 start in conference action. Should they sweep for a 4-0 start that would mark the best embarkation to NEC play for the Mount since the 1999-2000 start.
PONDERING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart split their first two series in conference play, winning games against Long Island and Wagner. Three Pioneers posted double figures, and the defense held the Seahawks to 21 second half points in their most recent win.
The Pioneers boast a plentiful roster of veteran players and graduate transfers. Six players are averaging between seven and 10 points per game, led by Adrianne Hagood at 9.8 points per game. As a team, SHU is second in the NEC for defensive rebounds, and the Pioneers outrebounded Wagner 42-25 during their victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount's next scheduled game is another rescheduled contest with Saint Francis U. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Loretto. Resumption of the original schedule is on track for January 23
rd and 24
th against Central Connecticut at home.
