Box Score Easton, Pa. (Saturday, March 8th) – The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 on the road with a 12-9 win over Lafayette (4-2) on Saturday afternoon. Jordan Butler (2g, 2a), Kate Kinsella (2g, 1a), Alayna Pagnotta (3g), Beanie Colson (2g, 1a), and Erin Anderson (2g, 2a) all tallied three-plus points to help the Mountaineers take down the Leopards. Colson led the squad with six draw controls and three caused turnovers while Jenna Oler earned the win in net with eight saves on the day.
The first half between the Mountaineers and the Leopards was a nip and tuck battle. It seemed like every time the Mount scored, Lafayette would have an answer right back and vice versa. No team had more than a one goal lead and we headed into the halftime break even at six apiece.
After Pagnotta gave the Mount an 7-6 lead to open the second half, back-to-back goals from Olivia Cunningham had the Leopards in front 8-7 with 24:40 to go. This is where the Mountaineers began to take over. Five straight Mountaineer goals from five different players (Colson, Butler, Groover, Pagnotta, and Anderson) had the Mount in front 12-8 with 12:52 to play. The Mountaineer defense would hold the Leopard offense scoreless for 22 minutes and 11 seconds in the second half to eventually win 12-9.
The Mount defense caused nine turnovers and held the Leopards to only ten second half shots. The clearing game was effective for the Mountaineers finishing 16-for-18. A key stat in the victory was the Mount offense going 4-for-5 on free position shots and holding the Leopards 0-for-2.
Olivia Cunningham led the Lafayette offense with five goals and one assist. Four other Leopards tallied goals while Quinn Lacy made seven saves in the loss.
The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team will return to Waldron Family Stadium for a two-game homestand against Howard and Temple next week. The matchup against Howard on Wednesday, March 11th is set for 3:00 p.m.
