Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (Saturday, February 15th) – Zoe Hurlburt's second goal of the game helped Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse triumph over George Washington 11-10 in overtime on Saturday. Jordan Groover had a huge all-around performance for the Mountaineers with two goals, two assists (including game winner), five groundballs, and three draw controls. Kate Kinsella (2g, 1a) and Beanie Colson (3g) each provided three points in the victory.
After the Colonials knotted the first goal of the game, Hurlburt got the Mountaineers on the board with a great pass from Jordan Groover. George Washington would take the only two-goal lead of the matchup after back-to-back goals to lead 3-1. Jordan Butler's first goal of the season would tie the game up at three with 13:31 to play in the first half. After the teams traded goals towards the end of the first half, Amber Germer found the back of net with 40 seconds left to give the visitors a 6-5 halftime lead.
Six minutes into the second half, Alayna Pagnotta put home her first of the 2020 season to even the game at six. After consecutive Colonial goals, Beanie Colson jumped in on the action to tie the game once again at eight. With 8:03 remaining and the Mount trailing 9-8, Colson would not be denied as she potted two goals to give the Mountaineers a 10-9 lead. Katie Quinn's goal with 3:08 left evened the game at 10-10. Carly Miller (2a) would have a free position shot with six seconds left in regulation to win it but did not find the back of the net and we headed to overtime.
George Washington won the draw control battle 13-10, but the Mountaineers came up with the biggest one of the game to take possession in overtime. As time was expiring on the shot clock, Groover found an open Hurlburt and the rest is history. Hurlburt's second goal of this matchup gave Mount women's lacrosse a victory in their season opener.
The Mountaineers won the groundballs in this matchup 18-16 and forced the Colonials into 14 turnovers. Jenna Oler had a solid Mountaineer-debut with eleven saves in the cage for the win.
Katie Quinn (4g, 1a) and Morgan McDonnell (2g, 2a) had a strong performance for George Washington (0-2) while goalkeeper Megan Patrick finished with nine saves in the loss.
The Mount women's lacrosse team will return to action on Wednesday, February 19th to take on UMBC at Waldron Family Stadium. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
