Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13)--The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team had two doubles tandems advance to the semifinals of the season-opening Mount St. Mary's Invitational today. The tournament pairs teams of two that play a best-of-three series of one doubles match and two singles matches to advance. The Mount's tandems of Jackson Wood/Parth Sharma and Jean Armstrong/Evan Hine each advanced to the semifinals to lead the way for the Mount.
Wood and Sharma opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Mercyhurst's Sebastian Pardo and Pranav Sadhvani in the first round. Wood and Sharma took the doubles point, 6-3, with Wood downing Pardo (6-4, 6-3) and Sharma defeating Sadhvani (7-2, 7-6 [6]).
The Mount's Nick Huynh and Ben Porto fell to Bucknell's Ryan Jurist and Cooper Bradshaw by a 3-0 score. Jurist and Bradshaw won the doubles point, 6-1, with Jurist defeating Hunyh (6-1. 6-0) and Bradshaw downing Porto (6-0. 6-3) in singles. The Mount's Joshua Spiers and Christian Duran lost to Mercyhurst's Ruairidh Fraser and Kiran Richards, 3-0. The Mercyhurst pair won the doubles point, 6-3, with Fraser beating Spiers (6-3, 6-0) in singles and Richards defeating Duran (6-3, 7-6 [3]) in singles action. The Mount's Jacob Berg and Dakota Fernandez were defeated by Sebastian Pinos and Andrew Teixeira of Saint Francis U, 3-0. Saint Francis won the doubles point, 6-4, while Pinos clipped Berg (6-1, 6-0) and Teixeira won over Fernandez (6-1, 6-0) in singles play.
The Mount pair of Gabriel Santos and Alonso Garcia moved on to the second round with a 2-1 victory over Per Astrom and Guillermo Torres of Bucknell. Santos/Garcia won the doubles points, 6-2, while Garcia won singles over Astrom (6-0, 6-1). Torres downed Santos (6-2, 6-3) in the other singles match.
In the second round, Wood and Sharma edged Jurist and Bradshaw, 2-1, to move to the semifinals. The Mount pair won a hard-fought doubles match (7-6 [5]) while Wood posted a win over Jurist (6-3, 6-3) to clinch the match. Bradshaw earned a win over Sharma (7-3, 7-6 [8]) in the other singles match. Armstrong and Hine also moved to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Pinos and Teixeira, winning the doubles point (7-5) with Armstrong knocking off Pinos (6-3, 7-6 [3]) and Hine over Teixeira (7-5, 1-6, 1-0 [2]) in singles play.
Fraser and Richards moved to the semfinals with a 2-1 win over the Mount's Russell Armstrong and Jarrett Karnibad. The Mercyhurst pair won the doubles points, 6-0, while Fraser beat Armstrong (6-1, 6-0) to clinch the match. Karnibad posted a win over Richards (6-1, 6-2) for the Mount's point. Santos and Garcia lost to Mercyhurst's Unai Amiletta Gonzalez and Cormac McCooey, 3-0, in the second round as well. Mercyhurst won the doubles point (6-4) with McCooey posting a win over Santos (6-1, 6-2) and Fernandez a win over Garcia (6-3, 6-3) in singles.
