Emmitsburg, Md. (April 6, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team topped Loyola 5-2 on Friday evening. Jackson Wood picked up his first win in the number one singles flight to move to a 16-12 singles record which is good for second best on the team in his freshman season with the Mount. Brandon Wortkotter recorded another doubles flight victory for his 16th on the year. Wortkotter is currently in second place all-time in doubles victories for the Mountaineers and is only five wins away from tying the record.
The Mount swept Loyola in doubles action to earn the one point advantage from doubles play heading into singles competition. Wortkotter/Wood defeated Jones/Fitzmaurice 6-2 in the number one flight to kick things off for Mount St. Mary's. Jean Armstrong/Gabriel Santos edged Burch/Blessing 6-4 to secure the doubles point for the Mount and Evan Hine/Parth Sharma topped Gower/Hoffarth 6-4 in the third flight.
In singles action, the Mountaineers won the first, second, fourth, and fifth flights to secure the overall match victory and improve Mount St. Mary's to 6-9 while Loyola drops to 7-4. Wood topped Jones 6-2, 6-3 in the first flight to kick singles off for the Mountaineers and Santos defeated Shanker 6-1, 6-2 to close things out in the fifth flight.
The Mount men are back in action Saturday, April 7 when they take on Saint Francis University at 4:15.
