Fairfax, Va. (February 4, 2017) – Louis Tonon and Brandon Wortkotter registered victories in singles action, but the Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team fell by a 5-2 final at George Mason on Friday night.
Tonon claimed victory at the third flight of singles, topping Edward Ayers, 7-5, 7-6(1), and Workotter posted the Mount's other win of the night at No. 6 singles, defeating Isaiah Volk, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
At the top flight of singles, Mateo DeSomocurcio won the first set over Pally Ray, 6-0, but fell in the ensuing pair of sets as Ray closed out the 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Jakob Nielsen posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Darren Mast at No. 2 as George Mason took the top two flights of singles.
Rookies Zachary Burau and Jean Armstrong won a set each in their singles matches, but Burau ended up falling to Alexis Pinnsonneault, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 and Armstrong dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 decision at the fifth flight.
George Mason swept doubles action as Lange and Nielsen topped Tonon and Desomocurcio, 6-3, at the top flight, Curtis and Ayers defeated Armstrong and Burau, 7-6 (2), at No. 2, and Ray and Pinsonneault earned a 6-2 win over Wortkotter and Mast at No. 3.
The Mount returns to action on February 25 for a match at Lehigh at 11 a.m.
