Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 3, 2016) – Detroit Mercy outscored Mount St. Mary's University by a 5-3 margin in the second half to come from behind and edge the Mount, 10-9, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Sunday at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Mountaineers controlled play for most of the first half and took a 6-5 lead into the break following a free-position goal by Maloney with just one second left. Sammie Knapp paced the Mount in the first frame with a pair of goals.
Detroit scored the opening four goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the contest, 9-6, with 26:06 remaining. Knapp ended the Titans' run with her third goal of the game at the 25:20 mark, cutting the Mount deficit to 9-7.
The Mountaineers pulled within one, 9-8, on a free-position goal by Nicole Lantuh with 12:28 showing on the clock. The tally for Lantuh was her team-leading 21st of the season. Kaitlyn Wandelt responded for Detroit under a minute later to push the Titans' lead back to two, 10-8.
Molly Morris trimmed the Mount deficit to one goal once again with just 56 seconds remaining, tallying her 18th of the season off a feed from Maloney. The Titans controlled the ensuing draw and were able to maintain possession to kill the rest of the clock and escape with a 10-9 victory.
Knapp paced the Mount with a team-high three goals, while Lantuh (2g) and Maloney (1g, 1a) also posted multi-point performances. Steph Rurkowski took the loss in goal despite making six saves in the tilt.
Wandelt led all scorers with five points on four goals and one assist, and Lexie Kinmond chipped in with a pair of goals and one assist. Allison McDonough stopped 11 shots to collect her sixth win in cage.
The Mount opens Northeast Conference play with a home tilt against Bryant on Friday, April 8 at 4 p.m.
