Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 10, 2016) – Four Mountaineers registered multi-goal performances as Mount St. Mary's University posted an 11-9 win over Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. The victory evened the Mount's conference record to 1-1 on the season.
Nicole Lantuh paced the Mount with a team-high four points on two goals and a pair of assists, while Molly Morris notched a team-high three goals, and Kelly Maloney and Taylor Carhart each added two.
Senior Steph Rurkowski made 13 saves, including several key stops late in the second half, to collect her third win of the season and sixth double-digit save performance of the year.
Madison Hughes (2g, 2a) and Falynn McCartney (3g) combined for seven points to lead the Central Connecticut attack. Jackie Branthover made six stops and took the loss in goal.
The Blue Devils got a pair of quick goals to open the contest, but the Mount tied it up at 2-2 just over a minute later and never trailed for the remainder of the game. The Mount followed with five more goals in a span of six-plus minutes to open its largest lead of the tilt, 7-3, with 19:15 to play in the first half.
Central Connecticut battled back, cutting its deficit to 8-6 heading into halftime break after scoring three of the half's final four goals.
A tally from Madison Hughes three minutes into the second period cut the Mount's lead to 8-7, but the Mountaineers held Central Connecticut off the board in the ensuing 22-plus minutes, and Maloney tallied her second goal of the content during the stretch to extend the Mount's lead back to two, 9-7.
After a goal from Jessica Giangarra at the 5:04 mark cut the Blue Devils' deficit to one once again, Molly Morris and Taylor Carhart responded with back-to-back goals to push the Mountaineers' lead to 11-8 with just one minute remaining in the contest.
Central Connecticut got one back in the final minute, but the Mount went on for the 11-9 victory to improve to grab its first NEC victory of the season.
The Mount held the Blue Devils to just three goals in the second half as Rurkowski made nine saves in the period.
Mount St. Mary's travels to LIU Brooklyn for its first NEC road game of the year on Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
