Molly Morris Tallies Career-High Five Goals, but Mount Edged by American, 11-10

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 2, 2016) – Senior attack Molly Morris tallied seven points on a career-high five goals and two assists, but Mount St. Mary's University was edged by American, 11-10, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday at Waldron Family Stadium.

Morris netted three of her five scores in the second half, including the game-tying goal with just 5:11 remaining in the contest. The senior from Silver Spring, Md. now leads the team with six goals and nine points on the year. Junior middie Sammie Knapp helped pace the Mount with three goals and one assist, and Kelly Maloney and Nicole Lantuh added multi-point games with a goal and an assist apiece.

Olivia Mangan powered American with six points on three goals and three helpers, while Madison Hoon and Jennifer DeSimone chipped in with a pair of tallies each.

Steph Rurkowski posted eight saves in the Mount goal, while her counterpart, Fiona Geier, stopped five shots to earn the win for the Eagles.

American scored five of the opening six goals in the contest before the Mount responded with three straight, as Morris, Maloney and Knapp each tallied a goal during the rally to cut the Mountaineer deficit to 5-4 at the midway mark of the first period.

Hoon and Shauna Norris registered the final two goals of the half to push the American lead to 7-4 heading into the break.

Following a goal from DeSimone to open the second half, Knapp and Morris tallied back-to-back scores to bring the Mount within two, 8-6, at the 19:12 mark. The Mountaineers outscored American 3-2 in the ensuing eight minutes of play to trim their deficit to one, 10-9.

With just over five minutes remaining in the contest, Morris struck again to bring the Mount back even, 10-10, with her fifth goal of the tilt. Knapp picked up the assist on the play for her fourth point of the game.

Just under a minute later, Hoon found the back of the net to put American back out in front, 11-10, with 4:23 to play in the contest. The Eagles were able to maintain possession in the final minutes to hold off the Mount and earn the one-goal victory.

The Mountaineers return to action this Saturday (March 5) for a road game against Longwood at 1 p.m.
