Washington, D.C. (February 13, 2016) – Sophomore Brandon Wortkotter defeated Spencer Kelly in the final singles match to propel Mount St. Mary's men's tennis to a 4-3 victory over Howard on Saturday afternoon.
In singles play, Ismael Kaouache topped Austin Blake 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 1 singles spot and Will Jones earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Mateo DeSomocurcio in No. 2 singles as Howard claimed the first two singles wins. Louis Tonon defeated Myron Davis, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles for the Mount's first singles victory, but Laguna Foster clipped Darren Mast, 7-6, 7-5, in No. 4 singles. Peter Salomon topped Hawk Owens, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 singles and Wortkotter clinched the Mountaineers' victory with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Kelly in the final singles match.
Mount St. Mary's won all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Blake and DeSomocurcio topped Kaouache and Will Jones, 5-3, Tonon and Wortkotter defeated Foster and Owens, 6-4, and Salomon and Mast downed Davis and Kelly, 6-2.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, February 20 with a match at Navy at 2 p.m.
