Lewisburg, Pa. (September 6, 2015)—The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's tennis teams had several strong showings at the Bucknell Quad Tournament this weekend. Peter Salomon (Haymarket, Va.) lost in the championship match of the Flight C singles while Louis Tonon (Charlotte, N.C.) captured the Consolation crown in Flight B singles.
Solomon won his first three matches this weekend to advance to the championship in Flight C singles. A senior, Solomon downed Lars Olson of Concordia (7-5, 6-1) in the first round, Mark Pronchick of Colgate (7-6, 1-6, 10-3) in the quarterfinals and Dean Koman of Colgate (7-5, 6-2) in the semifinals to advance to the final match. In the finals, Solomon was downed by Bucknell's Max McDonald in a tough match, 6-3, 7-6.
After dropping his first round match, Tonon won his final three matches in the tournament to win the Flight B singles consolation crown. Tonon knocked off Jake Hirschberg of Colgate (7-6, 6-3), Win Reynolds of Colgate (6-3, 6-4) and Tyler Blessing of Loyola (7-5, 7-6) in the consolation round.
In Flight A singles, Austin Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa.) won his first round match over Nick Laub of Colgate in straight sets before falling in the quarterfinals to Max Kane of Bucknell. Mateo DeSomocurcio (Lima, Peru) won his first round match over Connor Pietrak of Loyola before falling to Dan Wright of Bucknell in a hard-fought match, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
Darren Mast (Lancaster, Pa.) won his first round match in Flight B singles, 6-4, 6-3, against Matt Beijan of Loyola before falling in the quarterfinals.
On the women's side, Kelly Smith (Davenport, Wash.) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kaelin Brittan of Colgate in the first round before falling to Steffy Canals of Concordia in the quarterfinals of the Flight B singles.
Brittany Poje (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Erin Benefiel (Lake Mary, Fla.) teamed up for a win in their first round match before falling in the quarterfinals.
Emma Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa.) advanced to the consolation final in Flight C singles, falling to Colgate's Nicole Szczech.
The Mountaineer men and women's teams are back in action on Wednesday, September 9, when Shepherd visits the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Courts for a 5:30 p.m. match.
