Mount Men's Tennis Completes Day Two of Loyola Invitational
Baltimore, Md. (September 19, 2015)—The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team had a busy day at the Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational on Saturday.
In the quarterfinals, the Mount's pair of Brandon Wortkotter and Darren Mast lost to Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh, 2-1. The Mount captured the doubles point, 8-2, but saw Johns Hopkins win both singles matches to win the match and advance.
Louis Tonon and Mateo DeSomocurcio also lost in the quarterfinals. The pair downed Scott Thygesen and Colin Muraika, 8-5, in the doubles matchup. Both singles matches were extended to the super tiebreaker, but Johns Hopkins came out on top in both to take the match, 2-1. DeSomocurcio fell to Thygesen, 2-6, 6-3 (10-5) while Tonon was edged by Muraika, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7 (10-6).
In the consolation bracket, Sean McNulty and Mike Lake lost to Loyola's Tyler Blessing and Greg Olesnycky, 2-1. Loyola won the doubles point, 8-2. McNulty downed Blessing in straight sets, but Olesnycky defeated Lake in the other singles match to seal the win for the Greyhounds.
Also in the consolation bracket, Austin Blake and Peter Salomon were downed by Ramakrishnan and Hoeppner of Morgan State, 2-1. The Mount earned the doubles point, 8-7 (7-5), but Morgan State captured both singles matches to win the match.
In the direction consolations, Mast and Wortkotter were edged by Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro of Loyola, 2-1. Mast and Wortkotter won the doubles match. Tonon and DeSomocurcio earned a 2-1 win over Ward and Ferguson of Morgan State, taking both singles matches in straight sets.
Blake and Salomon had a 2-1 win over Loyola's Reid Burch and Jack Shortell. The Mount duo won the doubles point while Blake downed Burch in singles play. In the final directional consolation, McNulty and Lake fell to a Loyola pair, 2-1, with McNulty winning in singles.
The tournament concludes tomorrow.
