Mount Tennis Has Pair of Teams Advance at Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational

DAY ONE RESULTS

Baltimore, Md. (September 18, 2015)--A pair of doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals at the Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational on Friday. 

Each pair entered in the tournament competes as a team. An eight-game pro-set is played in doubles followed by singles in a best two-of-three fashion with the third set played as a super-tiebreaker. The team that wins two of the three points moves on in the competition while the losing pair moves to the consolation bracket.

For the Mount, Mateo DeSomocurcio and Louis Tonon advanced with a 3-0 win over Matthew Beijan and Brett Isihara of Loyola.  DeSomocurcio and Tonon won the doubles point with an 8-2 victory.  In singles, DeSomocurcio defeated Beijan, 6-4, 6-2 while Tonon clipped Ishihara, 6-3, 4-6 (10-5).

The Mount's tandem of Brandon Wortkotter and Darren Mast also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Loyola's Jordan Kuchta and C.J. Cash.  The Mount won the doubles point with an 8-5 decision.  In singles, Mast fell to Kuchta, 7-5, 6-4, but Wortkotter posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cash to give the mOunt the 2-1 win.

The Mount's Austin Blake and Peter Salomon were edged by Loyola's Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro, 2-1.  The Mount won the doubles point, 8-3, but fell in both singles matches.  Pietrak downed Blake, 6-3, 7-6 while Salomon fell to Caster, 7-5, 7-5.

The Mount's final pair, Sean McNulty and Mike Lake, lost to Justin Kang and David Perez of Johns Hopkins, 3-0.  After falling 8-3 in doubles, McNult lost to Perez, 6-2, 6-2 in singles play while Lake was clipped by Kang, 6-0, 6-0.

The teams started their quarterfinal matches on Friday as well, completing the doubles matches.  Mast and Wortkotter took a 1-0 lead over Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh of Johns Hopkins with an 8-2 victory.  DeSomocurcio and Tonon also grabbed a 1-0 advantage with an 8-5 doubles win over Scott Thygesen and Colin Muraika.

In the consolation round, Blake and Salomon edged a pair from Morgan State for a 1-0 lead while McNulty and Lake fell behind 1-0 with a doubles loss to a team from Loyola.

The Mount is back in action on Saturday.
