The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team returns to action this weekend with a pair of road games. The Mountaineers visit Howard on Friday night before heading to VCU on Sunday.
• OPENING WHISTLE •
Mount St. Mary's is coming off an impressive 3-0 win over UMBC on Sunday in the second round of the Battle of Baltimore. Freshman Jenna West scored a pair of first-half goals while freshman Kirsten O'Malley added her first career score in the second half to lead the Mount to the win. Quinn Costello-Mays and Rachel Bourne combined for the shutout. The Mount opened the tournament with a 4-0 loss against Towson on Friday night. West and senior Nicole Vallely were named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament team.
• THIS AND THAT •
The Mount has three remaining non-conference games, all on the road, beginning at Howard on Friday night...The Mount will also visit VCU (Sept. 20) and Delaware State (Sept. 27) before opening Northeast Conference play at Fairleigh Dickinson on October 2...The Mountaineers have scored seven goals this season after posting just nine for the entire 2014 campaign...Freshmen have accounted for seven of the Mount's nine goals this year..The Mount has won three of its past four matchups with UMBC.
• WEST EARNS PAIR OF NEC WEEKLY HONORS •
* Freshman Jenna West was named the Northeast Conference Co-Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday. West scored a pair of goals to lead the Mount to a 3-0 victory against UMBC on Sunday.
* West leads the Mount and is tied for the NEC lead with three goals and seven points. She is the first Mountaineer to earn Player of the Week honors since Alicia Mirando on Oct. 20, 2014. She is just the seventh Mountaineer all-time to earn the weekly honor.
* West is the first Mount player to be named NEC Rookie of the Week since Jackie Glanfield on Sept. 23, 2013.
• LEAGUE LEADERS •
* Freshman Jenna West is tied for the Northeast Conference lead in points (7) and goals (3).
* Senior goalkeeper Rachel Bourne is currently third in the NEC with 34 saves and fourth in save percentage (.756).
• ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM •
* The Mount went 1-1 at the Battle of Baltimore last weekend, falling to Towson (4-0) on Friday before defeating UMBC (3-0) at home on Sunday.
* Senior Nicole Vallely and freshman Jenna West were named to the All-Tournament team. It is the second consecutive season that Vallely was named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament team.
