Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 3, 2015) – Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied her fifth multi-goal game of the season with three on Friday afternoon, but it was not enough in the Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team's 13-7 loss to Wagner in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams at Waldron Family Stadium. Nicole Lantuh (Bethesda, Md.) facilitated the Mount's offense with a career-high three assists in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's (1-9, 0-1 NEC) dug itself a 6-0 hole in the first 15 minutes of the game as the momentum swung to Wagner (4-7, 1-0 NEC). Before the half was done, the Mountaineers cut the deficit down to four on three occasions but were never able to pull even.
"I think we had our ups and downs throughout the entire game," Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann said. "That was a really physical team, and I think they rattled us a little bit. Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) did a really good job in goal, so a lot of credit to her. She made some good saves for us, but again, we were never really able to grab the momentum for the entire game."
Rurkowski made nine saves between the pipes for the Mount, including six in the second half to keep her team in the game.
Wagner, which held a 28-16 advantage on shots on the day, was led by three goals apiece from Gretchen Fay and Stephanie Peterson, while Shea Gegan handed out four assists.
After Wagner scored the game's first six goals, Maloney got the Mount on the board with a strike off a feed from Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) with 10:18 left in the first half. Fay converted a free position shot to put the Seahawks' lead back up to 7-1 just one minute after Maloney's goal.
Knapp continued to impact the Mount's offense with two goals in a 28-second span to get the Mount back in the game at 7-3 with 8:13 to go in the first half. Lantuh and Molly Morris (Silver Spring, Md.) dished out the assists on Knapp's goals.
In the final 5:17 of the half, Wagner found the back of the net twice with Maloney also getting on the board off a Nicole Snyder (Elkridge, Md.) feed as the Mount trailed by a 9-4 margin through 30 minutes.
Lantuh's goal early in the second half put the Mount down four at 9-5, but the Seahawks rattled off three goals in a row and held the Mount without a goal for just over 23 minutes. Morris broke through for a goal with 6:32 remaining to put the score at 12-6 in favor of the visitors.
Both teams scored in the final five minutes with Maloney completing her hat trick with 1:17 remaining.
Knapp posted a team-high four draw controls for the Mount, which was edged in draw controls for the game, 12-10.
The Mount returns to action with a road game at Saint Francis U on April 10, at 3 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The Mount falls to 15-5 in the all-time series versus Wagner… The three assists for Nicole Lantuh are the most for a Mount player this season.
