Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 19, 2015) – Playing the final home regular season game of their careers, all four of the Mount St. Mary's University women's lacrosse team's seniors scored goals to carry the Mountaineers to their fourth-consecutive win, beating LIU Brooklyn by an 18-6 final score in Northeast Conference action at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Mount's win over LIU Brooklyn (6-8, 2-3 NEC) coupled with Robert Morris' win over Central Connecticut helps the Mountaineers clinch a spot in the four-team Northeast Conference Tournament.
After Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md.), Megan Gluck (South Riding, Va.), Erin Seipp (Towson, Md.) and Hayley Tomilson (West Chester, Pa.) were honored with a Senior Day ceremony, all four found the back of the net as the Mount (5-9, 4-1 NEC) scored a season-high 18 goals. Freshman Marley Heller (Baltimore, Md.) also made a major contribution with a career-high six points on five goals and one assist.
For the Mount, it is the program's first four-game winning streak since the 2011 season.
"This was a great win for us in the conference," Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann said. "It gives us a lot of confidence going into the upcoming weekend and then hopefully into the NEC Tournament. I think we had a tremendous team effort with some standout performances from Erin (Seipp), Melissa (Cox) and Marley (Heller)."
After back-and-forth action in the early going put the score at 2-2 with 20 minutes to go before halftime, the Mount reeled off six goals in a row to take control of the game at 8-2. Seipp and Heller scored two goals apiece during the stretch with Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) and Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) both contributing one goal.
Each side tallied one more goal in the final 10:45 of the opening half to give the Mount a 9-3 halftime edge.
Jenn Peters, who led the visitors with two goals on the afternoon, opened the second half with a goal, and Tori Shinkowitz followed with a free position goal to cut the Mount's advantage down to 9-5 with 26 minutes remaining.
The Mountaineers put away the Blackbirds with nine of the game's final 10 goals to pull away.
In the closing nine minutes, Tomilson scored her first goal of the season, and Cox registered her first career goal for the Mountaineers.
In cage for the Mount, junior Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) made nine saves, holding the opponent to just six goals for the second-consecutive game. On the other end, Alexis Maldonado turned away seven shots for LIU Brooklyn.
Mount St. Mary's outshot the Blackbirds by a 32-18 margin and won the draw controls battle, 14-12.
The 18 goals for the Mount are the most since an 18-3 road win at Delaware State on March 1, 2014. The last time the Mountaineers put up 18 or more goals on a Northeast Conference opponent was April 14, 2012 in a 19-9 victory at LIU Brooklyn.
Next on the schedule, the Mount closes the regular season with road tilts at Central Connecticut on April 24 and at Bryant on April 26.
