MOUNT UPDATE: The fourth-seeded Mount St. Mary's University men's tennis team heads to New Jersey this week with the goal of winning its first-ever Northeast Conference Championship. The team will begin the tournament with a quarterfinal match on Friday against fifth-seeded Wagner. A win against the Seahawks would see the Mountaineers take on top-seeded Bryant on Saturday. The Mount has compiled a .667 team doubles winning percentage against conference opponents in 2015, led by the 13-4 record of Austin Blake and Brandon Wortkotter.
ABOUT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The single-elimination tournament begins with quarterfinal matches on Friday, continues with semifinals on Saturday and ends with the championship match on Sunday. The winner will earn a spot in the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament.
LAST TIME OUT: The Mount was swept by hosts George Mason 7-0 on Sunday. No. 2 singles player Mateo DeSomocurcio, seeking his 17th win on the season, provided the Mountaineers' closest effort at grabbing a point from the Patriots with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Aaron Capitel. The team's scheduled season finale against Loyola was cancelled due to rain.
ABOUT WAGNER: The Seahawks enter tournament play riding a five-match win streak, their season capped off with a 5-2 win against Rider. Wagner swept the contest's three doubles spots behind the play of No. 1 flight pairing Ryan Khan and Sam Flaxman. In singles play, Charlton Boyd leads the team with 18 wins, with Michal Rolski a close second at 17 singles victories.
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. WAGNER: The Mountaineers hold a 7-1 record against Wagner dating back to 2001, including a 4-3 win over the Seahawks last month in Emmitsburg. The Mount swept the doubles portion of the teams' 2015 match, and Austin Blake defeated Rolski 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 at the No. 1 singles spot. Adam Salam and Peter Salomon defeated Wagner's Juan Alanis and Sam Flaxman respectively in singles to seal the Mount's sixth win of the season.
AT LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONSHIPS: After qualifying as the sixth seed in the 2014 NEC tournament, Mount St. Mary's dropped a 4-2 decision to Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals. DeSomocurcio was the lone singles winner for the Mountaineers, and he also added a doubles victory pairing up with Adam Salam.
TOURNEY TIME: Since the NEC Championships moved to a team-flighted event in 1999, the Mountaineers have a 6-16 record in the championship side of the bracket. The Mount advanced to the 2005 NEC Championship match, falling to Quinnipiac, 4-1.
FOURTH SEED: The Mountaineers are the fourth seed in the NEC Tournament for the third time in school history. The Mount was also seeded fourth in 2012 and 2013.
