Mount St. Mary's University Women's Lacrosse Defeats Saint Francis, 14-10, for First NEC Win

Loretto, Pa. (April 10, 2015) – Seven different players scored goals for the Mount St. Mary's University women's lacrosse team to lead the Mountaineers to their first Northeast Conference win this season by a 14-10 margin over Saint Francis University on the road on Friday afternoon. Senior Erin Seipp (Towson, Md.) paced the Mount with four goals on the day.

The Mount (2-9, 1-1 NEC) held a 5-4 halftime lead before outscoring Saint Francis (3-8, 0-2 NEC) 9-6 in the final 30 minutes.

"We started the game off strong and did a good job of finishing our shot opportunities," Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann said. "We really wanted to push the fast break and had some really nice goals out of transition. Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) played really well today and definitely stepped up with some nice saves."

After a quick strike from SFU's Christina Fini put the home side up 1-0 just 46 seconds into the game, the Mount responded with four-consecutive goals to gain control.

Marley Heller (Baltimore, Md.) tallied the first two goals to give the Mount the lead with 20:42 to go before the half. The Mount's lead quickly expanded thanks to the play of junior Molly Morris (Silver Spring, Md.), who assisted Seipp for the team's third goal before scoring a goal of her own with 15:01 showing on the first half clock.

Back-to-back tallies from Jessica Mazzur helped the Red Flash trim the Mount's advantage down to 4-3, but Seipp answered back with her second goal of the game for a 5-3 lead with 8:48 left in the half.

Saint Francis closed the gap to 5-4 going into the intermission on a goal from Sarah Mahon.

The Mountaineers dominated the early portion of the second half with three goals in the opening 3:14 to build the advantage up to 8-4. Nicole Lantuh (Bethesda, Md.), Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) and Megan Gluck (South Riding, Va.) were responsible for the Mount's goals during the stretch.

The Red Flash kept the game close with two goals with a free position goal from Seipp in between the two to put the score at 9-6 with 20 minutes left.

Over the next 12 minutes, the Mountaineers clamped down on defense, keeping Saint Francis off the board while scoring four goals on the other end. Knapp found the back of the net for the second time to start the run followed by a strike from Seipp. Morris and Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) capped the stretch with goals to boost the lead to 13-6.

Three goals in a row for the Red Flash cut the advantage to 13-9 before Heller gave the Mount breathing room with a goal with 3:05 left. Fini finished the game with the final goal for SFU with 2:34 remaining.

In the cage, Rurkowski finished with nine saves on the day, including five in the second half to help the Mountaineers preserve their lead. On the other end, Heather McKee stopped nine shots for the Red Flash. The Mount held a 17-16 edge in ground balls led by a team-best four from Heller.

The Mount returns to action with a home game versus Robert Morris on Sunday, April 12, at noon.
