Mount St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Loses Heartbreaker to Furman, 12-11, in Overtime

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 7, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's rallied from a six-goal deficit to force overtime, but lost a heartbreaker, 12-11, to Furman at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  Freshman Nicole Lantuh (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) each had three goals in the game for the Mountaineers.

Furman (5-0) raced to a 6-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of the game.  Devon Norine opened the scoring just nine seconds into the game.  After a Paige Gamble goal, the Paladins scored four times in a span of 1:53 to extend the lead to six.  Britt Douglass had a pair of goals in that stretch.

The Mount got back into the game on a Marley Heller (Baltimore, Md.) goal with 20:04 left in the first half, and Maloney notched her first goal of the game 1:20 later to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The score remained there for the next 14 minutes before Ashley Trice connected for Furman for a 7-2 advantage.  The Mountaineers made it 7-3 at the half when Molly Morris (Silver Spring, Md.) converted a pass from Erin Seipp (Towson, Md.) with 2:33 left in the half.

Furman scored the first two goals of the second half to push the lead back to six before the Mountaineers rallied.

Megan Gluck's (South Riding, Va.) goal off a free position shot with 20:09 left in regulation started the rally.  Maloney added a free position goal before Lantuh's first collegiate goal cut the deficit to 9-6 with 13:22 left in regulation.

Trice countered with her second goal of the game to make it 10-6 with 9:17 on the clock, but the Mountaineers scored the final four goals of the second half to tie the game at 10-10.

Lantuh potted back-to-back scores to cut the Mount's deficit in half, 10-8, with 4:15 remaining.  Sammie Knapp (Cubhill, Md.) converted a free position shot with 2:31 on the clock to make it a one-goal game.

Furman won the draw control, and took two minutes off the clock before the Mount forced a turnover to get the ball back.  After a good clear, Seipp was awarded a free position shot, and she scored to even the score with 24 seconds left in regulation.

The Paladins had two chances to win in regulation in the closing seconds, but Mount goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) came up with a save to force overtime.

Furman scored in the opening minute of the extra session to make it 11-10 when Meg Lingo tallied her third goal of the game.  Furman extended its lead to 12-10 on a Douglass goal with 3:03 left in the overtime period.

The Mount cut the Furman lead to 12-11 when Maloney scored her third goal of the game with 26 seconds left in overtime.  The Mount won the ensuing draw control, but turned the ball over, and Furman was able to run out the clock to preserve the win.

Lantuh led the Mount with three goals and an assist while Maloney added three goals in the loss.  Seipp chipped in a goal and two assists as well for the Mount. Lingo led Furman with three goals and two assists while Douglass (3g) and Kristine Knowles (1g, 2a) also had three-point afternoons.

Rurkowski made nine saves for the Mount while Maggie Friel had 11 saves for Furman.  Furman held a slight 26-24 edge in shots and an 18-16 advantage in ground balls.

The Mount is back in action on Wednesday, March 11, at American.
