Mount Women's Tennis Opens NEC Play with Two Home Matches

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team jumps into Northeast Conference play with home matches versus Wagner on Friday and St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday. In singles action this season, Jennifer Smith, Cassandra Powell and Danielle Nguyen are all tied for the team lead with eight victories.

LAST TIME OUT: Facing in-state opponent UMES, the Mount cruised to a 7-0 victory on Saturday at the Mount Tennis Courts to improve to 6-5 on the season. The Mountaineers dominated doubles action with wins at all three slots, including 8-0 decisions by the pairings of Sruthi Kamprath/Cassandra Powell at No. 2 and Taylor D'Agostino/Isabella Draper at No. 3. In singles, D'Agostino (No. 4) and Sam Barbato (No. 6) earned their first victories of the season.

ABOUT WAGNER: The Seahawks look to bounce back after consecutive 7-0 losses to Drexel and Sacred Heart. Wagner is 2-1 in NEC play with a pair of wins over St. Francis Brooklyn.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. WAGNER: The Mount is a perfect 7-0 versus the Seahawks in seven all-time meetings. Friday will mark the fourth match between the two sides in the last three seasons. Last year, the Mountaineers earned a 7-0 victory over Wagner at the Mount Tennis Courts.

ABOUT ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN: The Terriers carry a 0-11 record into Saturday's match, most recently dropping a 5-0 decision at Hofstra on March 22.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN: Mount St. Mary's has gone 5-0 in the all-time series versus St. Francis Brooklyn dating back to the first meeting in 1998. The last time the two sides met was 2005 when the Mount earned a 7-0 victory over the Terriers.

NEC OPENER: The Mountaineers will be making their Northeast Conference debut after going 1-3 in league play a year ago. The Mount's lone regular season NEC victory last season was a 7-0 decision over Wagner at home.

NEC PRESEASON POLL: The Mount was selected sixth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, ahead of Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn. Three-time defending Northeast Conference champion Fairleigh Dickinson topped the poll with five first-place votes, followed by LIU Brooklyn in second with two top votes. Bryant, which picked up the other top vote, checked in at third, with Sacred Heart and Saint Francis U to follow.
