PRINCETON, N.J. — Mount St. Mary's women's tennis saw its historic postseason run come to an end with a 4–0 loss to Quinnipiac in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship match on Sunday at the Princeton University Racquet and Fieldhouse.
The Mount finishes the season with a 14–9 record, while Quinnipiac improves to 18–6 and claims the MAAC title.
Quinnipiac seized early momentum by sweeping the completed doubles matches to take the doubles point. Caitlin Flower and Willow Renton earned a 6–4 win at No. 1, while Anagha Shankar and Vera Sekerina followed with a 6–3 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match was tied at 4–4 when play was halted.
In singles, Quinnipiac secured the championship with straight-set wins at Nos. 3, 4, and 5. Isabella Baker posted a 6–3, 6–2 victory over Margherita Trolese at No. 3, and Anagha Shankar added a 6–4, 6–2 win at No. 4. Vera Sekerina clinched the match with a 6–1, 7–5 decision over Bella Pescatore at No. 5.
Several matches remained in progress at the time of the clinch. Eirini Tsakiri held a third-set lead at No. 1, while Venus Tang was in a tight third set at No. 2. Anna Barlini was also locked in a close second set at No. 6 before play was stopped.
Despite the result, the Mount capped a landmark season with its first-ever appearance in the MAAC Championship match. The team's 14 wins are the most for the program since the 2009-10 season, and the Mount advanced to the conference final for the first time since winning the NEC title in 1995.
The season also represents one of the most dramatic turnarounds in program history. After winning just two matches a year ago, the Mount surged to 14 victories, a second-place regular season finish, and a run to the MAAC Championship match. Along the way, Mount St. Mary's won 12 of its final 14 matches to give the team the most wins in a season in 16 years.
