MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's enters the MAAC Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the league having won 11 of its past 12 matches to finish the regular season with a 13-8 mark. The Mount went 6-2 in MAAC play to secure the No. 2 seed at the MAAC Tennis Championships. The 13 wins are the most by a Mount team since the 2009-10 squad finished with a 16-5 mark. Five Mountaineers have winning records in singles play this season, including
Venus Tang (15-14),
Eirini Tsakiri (14-11),
Bella Pescatore (13-10),
Margherita Trolese (12-9) and
Anna Barlini (12-10).
ABOUT THE PIONEERS: Sacred Heart posted a 10-9 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the MAAC this season. The Pioneers finished in a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings, and earned the No. 3 seed by virtue of wins over Marist and Fairfield. Ava Nelson leads the team with 17-10 record in singles play while Ola Irla Bartyzel (14-10) and Savita Bagirathan (14-11) are also having strong seasons. Nelson and Bartyzel each earned First Team All-MAAC honors in singles.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Sacred Heart holds an 11-5 lead in the all-time series with the Mountaineers, including a 4-0 win over the Mount this season. The Mount has dropped its past five matches against the Pioneers, and is 0-2 against Sacred Heart in MAAC regular season matches. Mount St. Mary's and Sacred Heart were both members of the NEC between 1999 and 2022. The two teams met six times at the NEC Tennis Championships with the Pioneers winning four of the six matchups, including a 4-2 win in the NEC Quarterfinals in 2022. The Mount's last postseason win over the Pioneers was a 4-0 victory at the 2008 NEC Tennis Championships.
FIRST MEETING (SACRED HEART 4, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 0): The Mount and Sacred Heart played way back on February 21 with the Pioneers posting a 4-0 win indoors at the Tennis Club of Trumbull in the Mount's first MAAC match of the year. The Pioneers won two of the three doubles matches while earning wins at the top three singles positions. Matches at No. 4 thru No. 6 were not played.
THE MOUNT AND THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Mount St. Mary's joined the MAAC in 2022-23, and this is the second time the team has earned a spot at the MAAC Tennis Championships in the Mount's four years in the league. The Mount was the No. 4 seed at the 2023 MAAC Championships, falling to top-seeded Quinnipiac, 4-0. Prior to joining the MAAC, the Mount spent the previous 33 seasons in the NEC. The Mount went 10-23 all-time in the NEC Tennis championships, including an 0-7 mark in the semifinal round.   The Mount is 2-4 against Sacred Heart in conference tournament matches.
FIVE MOUNTAINEERS EARN ALL-MAAC HONORS:Â Five Mountaineers collected All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors, announced by the conference on Thursday morning.Â
Eirini Tsakiri was named First Team All-MAAC in singles while
Margherita Trolese and
Venus Tang collected Third Team All-MAAC honors in singles as well.Â
Emma Perkins and
Anna Barlini were named First Team All-MAAC in doubles.
