Mount Men's Tennis Hosts Wagner on Sunday for NEC Opener

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team makes its Northeast Conference debut with Sunday's home match versus Wagner at the Mount Tennis Courts. Through eight matches and three tournaments, sophomore Mateo DeSomocurcio leads the way with 11 singles victories with junior Austin Blake and freshman Brandon Wortkotter combining for a team-high nine doubles wins.

LAST TIME OUT: During the most recent spring break trip to Florida, the Mountaineers put together a 3-2 record with wins over Ohio Northern, Augustana and Otterbein. Mateo DeSomocurcio headlined the Mount's effort with a 5-0 singles record to go with a 4-1 doubles mark.

ABOUT WAGNER: Selected fourth in the NEC Preseason Poll, Wagner posted a perfect 7-0 record in the fall season. This spring, the Seahawks have gone 0-4, most recently suffering a 5-2 road loss at Drexel on March 8. Wagner has won 64.9 percent of its doubles matches and 61.1 percent of singles matches this season. In singles, Charlton Boyd has compiled a team-leading 11 victories.

LAST SEASON VS. WAGNER: The Mount picked up a 6-1 home win over Wagner last spring, winning the doubles point and five singles matches on the day. The Mountaineers were dominant at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots with the pairings of Adam Salam/Mateo DeSomocurcio (No. 2) and Austin Blake/Mike Zabetakis (No. 3) earning 8-0 victories. In singles, the Mountaineers won in straight sets at the No. 2-6 slots.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. WAGNER: The Mount's all-time record versus Wagner stands at 6-1. The Seahawks won the first matchup in 2001, while the Mountaineers have been victorious in the last six meetings.

MOUNT VS. THE NEC: Over the last three seasons, the Mount has gone 8-5 in NEC regular season matches. The team went 1-3 a year ago with NEC records of 4-1 and 3-1 in the previous two seasons.

NEC PRESEASON POLL: Mount St. Mary's was selected sixth in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. Bryant received six of the first-place votes to be chosen to repeat as NEC Champions. FDU garnered the other top vote and finished second in the poll. Saint Francis U, Wagner and Sacred Heart checked in at 3-4-5, while the Mount was selected one spot ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn.
