Box Score Washington, D.C. (March 11, 2015) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team was handed a 12-4 road loss at American on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mount (1-4) dug itself an 8-0 halftime deficit and was never able to recover as American (2-5) controlled the game from start to finish.
"We did not execute well on either side of the ball today," Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann said. "We need to play smarter and start off stronger in order to put ourselves in a better position to succeed. On a positive note, Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md.) did a great job for us today - she hustled all over the field and really made some nice plays for us on the defensive end."
Cox tied for the team lead with three draw controls and added two ground balls to anchor the defense. On the offensive end sophomore Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) posted her team-leading fourth multi-goal game of the season, leading the way with two goals on the day.
For the home side, Jessica Wojciechowski notched a game-high four goals, while Lexi Perez and Madison Hoon tallied two goals apiece.
Despite taking eight shots in the first half, the Mount was kept off the scoreboard thanks to the play of American goalkeeper Rose Redfoot, who recorded five saves in the opening 30 minutes. Wojciechwoski jumpstarted the Eagles' offense with three goals in the opening 6:09 of the game.
The Eagles held an 8-0 lead until sophomore Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) finished a free position shot early in the second half. Maloney followed with a free position goal of her own with 23:27 left, but American would go on to score the next four goals to pull away.
In the final 1:30 of the contest, freshman Nicole Lantuh (Bethesda, Md.) and Maloney both scored for the Mount.
In goal, Redfoot finished with eight saves in 53:42 of work with Taylor Dumpson picking up one save in the final 6:16. Junior Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) turned away nine AU shots on the day.
The Mountaineers held a slight 13-12 edge on ground balls, and the two sides finished with nine draw controls apiece.
Next up, the Mount will make a return trip to Washington, D.C. to take on George Washington on Tuesday, March 17.
