For the Mount (0-2), sophomore Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) added a goal with freshman Marley Heller (Baltimore, Md.) also chipping in with her first career goal.
"George Mason is a very well-coached team, and they were very disciplined," Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann said after the game. "They scored on us early, and we were trying to chip away but for the most part they had the better of the play. I think for the most part our defense did a pretty nice job today."
Jacquelyn Spalding tallied five goals and one assist to carry the Patriots (2-1), while Alexa McGovern secured a hat trick for the visitors.
George Mason scored the first four goals of the day in the opening 10:48 to grab the momentum. Marley's free position goal put the Mount back in the game with 6:06 to go in the opening half before Spalding scored her third goal of the day a minute later for a 5-1 George Mason halftime lead.
Two quick goals from McGovern and Spalding to kick off the second half helped the Patriots' lead balloon to 7-1.
Maloney's first strike of the day preceded two more George Mason goals for an 9-2 Mount deficit. The Mountaineers continued to battle however, holding the Patriots to just one goal in the final nine minutes. On the offensive end, Maloney converted a pair of free position attempts, and Knapp added an unassisted goal in the final minute of play.
The Mount held a 9-8 edge in draw controls led by a team-best three from Knapp. Defensively, senior Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md.) accounted for four of the team's 10 ground balls. Sophomore Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) made six saves between the pipes for the Mount with Taylor Carpentier stopping seven shots for the Patriots.
