Box Score Baltimore (February 21, 2015) – Facing snowy conditions in Baltimore, the Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team's comeback fell one goal short in a 5-4 road loss at UMBC on Saturday at UMBC Stadium in the first game with Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann at the helm. Sophomore captain Sammie Knapp (Cub Hill, Md.) tallied a pair of goals for the Mount in the season opener.
In a game that consisted of an 18-minute second half due to weather concerns, the Mount (0-1) trailed the Retrievers (1-2) by a 5-2 margin with 10 minutes remaining. The Mountaineers scored the game's final two goals, but could not find the equalizer to complete the comeback.
"We not only battled a scrappy UMBC team today, but we battled the snowy elements," Schwarzmann said. "Despite the outcome, I'm proud of the way our team played. We fought hard, and we definitely had our chances to win. A couple less turnovers and a couple less shots that hit the pipe, maybe it would've been a different story. We have another chance to get better on Wednesday, and we are looking forward to that."
Sam Sparr (Lexington Park, Md.) opened the scoring with the first goal of the day just 1:03 into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Retrievers were able to respond with four-consecutive goals from four different players to take a 4-1 edge with 4:47 to go in the opening half.
Knapp put the Mount back on the board with a strike with 4:00 showing on the first half clock to send the Mountaineers into halftime trailing 4-2.
With just 18 minutes allotted for the second half instead of the usual 30, UMBC grew its advantage on Abby Wilson's second goal of the game with 10:27 left.
The Mountaineers went to work on the offensive end and nearly cut into the lead when Kelly Maloney (Ellicott City, Md.) hit the post for the second time on the day with 9:27 remaining in the game. Just over a minute later however, Knapp found the back of the net for her second goal of the game. It was first multi-goal game of Knapp's Mount career.
With 3:37 left, senior Erin Seipp (Towson, Md.) tallied the Mount's fourth goal to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Mount did not get a shot off the rest of the way, falling by the slightest of margins.
Gluck secured a team-high four draw controls to go with a pair of ground balls to lead the Mount, which held an 8-3 advantage on draw controls for the game. UMBC scooped up 11 ground balls to the Mount's 10.
In goal for the Mount, sophomore Steph Rurkowski (Manlius, N.Y.) stopped five shots with Kelsey Major making two saves for UMBC.
Next on the schedule, the Mount travels to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m.
