OPENING SERVE: The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team opens the 11th season of the Phil Hammond era with the Bucknell Tournament Sept. 5-7. The Mount, which posted a 10-12 record in 2013-14, is looking to build on last spring's Northeast Conference Quarterfinals appearance.
THE FORMAT: The format will be a flighted individual tournament with flights A, B and C singles and doubles. On Friday, Sept. 5, the field will play two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The following day, one round of doubles and two rounds of singles will be played, with the rest of the matches being finished on Sunday.
THE FIELD: The men's field includes players from Bucknell, Loyola, Concordia and the Mount.
WELCOME BACK: The Mount returns nine letterwinners from last year's team, including sophomores Darren Mast and Mateo DeSomocurcio, who tied for the team lead with 12 singles wins as freshmen. No. 1 singles player, Adam Salam, is back for his senior season, while the No. 1 doubles team of Peter Salomon and Louis Tonon is also intact.
THE SCHEDULE: During the fall portion of the schedule, the Mount is set to play three tournaments as well as three dual matches. The schedule is highlighted by the three-day Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Oct. 3-5, which will serve as the home opener for the Mount. The team will also square off with La Salle and Rider at the Mount Tennis Courts this fall.
COACHING STAFF: Phil Hammond, now in his 11th season as head coach, has a new assistant coach with the addition of 2014 Mount graduate Samantha Pinchoff to the staff. Pinchoff is tied for fourth in Mount history with 52 career doubles victories to her credit.
UP NEXT: The Mount heads to the George Mason Invitational scheduled for Sept. 20-21.
