Shepherdstown, W. Va. (September 24, 2014) –  Competing in the first dual match of the fall campaign, the Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory at Shepherd on Wednesday.

The Mount (1-0) jumped on Shepherd (0-2) by taking all three of the doubles matches. In singles play, the Mountaineers were victorious in five of the six matches.

At the No. 1 doubles position Adam Salam and Mateo DeSomocurcio fought to an 8-4 win over Shepherd's Steve Kolumban and Steven Lesko, while Peter Salomon and Louis Tonon were 8-2 winners at the No. 2 slot against Grant Davis and Will Wheatley. Making his season debut, Austin Blake teamed with freshman Brandon Wortkotter for a dominating 8-0 victory at No. 3 versus Louis Charette and Austin Thomas.

Moving onto singles play, DeSomocurcio had no trouble with Kolumban, picking up a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 for his team-leading fourth victory of the fall. Darren Mast added his second win of the season at No. 3, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-0 against Lesko.

At the No. 4-6 slots, Salomon, Tonon and Wortkotter all secured their first singles victories of the fall. Salomon took down Wheatley, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4, and Tonon won by the same final at No. 5 over Thomas. Wortkotter's No. 6 victory was by a 6-0, 6-2 final over Charette.   

The Mount returns to action with the squad's home debut Oct. 3-5 for the Mount St. Mary's Invitational.

NOTE: The Mount is 11-6 versus Shepherd since 1989 and has won six in a row versus the Rams.
