MOUNT UPDATE: Following three tournaments to begin the fall portion of its schedule, the Mount women's tennis team plays its first dual match of the season on the road on Sept. 24 at Shepherd. Six different Mount players have won singles matches this season, led by Isabella Draper, Sruthi Kamprath and Cassandra Powell with two wins apiece.
LAST TIME OUT: The Mount put on a strong showing at the two-day Bucknell Invitational last weekend with a number of singles and doubles victories. Freshman Cassandra Powell (C flight) and junior Isabella Draper (D flight) both earned a pair of singles wins in their respective flights. In doubles action, the all-freshman duo of Powell and Sruthi Kamprath earned a win in flight A, as did sisters Jennifer Smith and Kelly Smith.
ABOUT SHEPHERD: The Rams have stumbled out of the gate with a 0-4 mark. Shepherd, which competes at the Division II level in the Mountain East Conference, most recently fell by a 7-0 margin on Sept. 13 versus the University of Charleston. The Mount is the second D-1 opponent for Shepherd, which opened the season with a loss to George Mason on Sept. 6.
LAST SEASON VS. SHEPHERD: In the first dual match last fall, the Mount put on a dominating performance in a 6-1 win over the Rams. The Mount began the day with wins in all three of the doubles matches before winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SHEPHERD: The Mount has dominated the series versus Shepherd with wins in all 12 of the matchups. The two sides squared off in 2001 for the first time and have played every year since the 2004-05 season.
AT IT AGAIN: Sisters Jennifer and Kelly Smith have paired up for two doubles wins this fall, tying for the team lead in the early going. Last season, the tandem won a team-best 11 doubles matches.
OPENING THE SEASON: Now playing its 27th season at the Division I level, the Mount has compiled an 18-8 all-time record in season openers. The Mount has started the last two falls with wins over Shepherd.
UP NEXT: The Mountaineers make their home debut with the Mount St. Mary's Invitational scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Mount Tennis Courts.
