Late-Game Heroics Carry Mount Women's Lacrosse to 10-9 Double Overtime Win at Sacred Heart

Box Score

Fairfield, Conn. (April 11, 2014) -- Playing the program's first double-overtime game since 2010, freshman Kelly Maloney notched the game-winner with 51 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the Mount a 10-9 Northeast Conference victory at Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon.

Snapping an eight-game losing streak, the Mount (2-10, 1-2) used a goal from Lindsay Diaz with eight seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 9-9 and force overtime.

Diaz recorded a hat trick, while Maloney and Bridget McGann netted two goals apiece to help the Mount improve its all-time record versus Sacred Heart (3-8, 1-2 NEC) to 15-5.

The Mount scored first on the afternoon when McGann beat the goalkeeper off a feed from Megan Gluck 3:03 into the game. Sacred Heart answered on the other end with two goals for a 2-1 edge with 10 minutes gone.

With 18:35 showing on the first half clock, Gluck scored for the second game in a row to level the scoring a 2-2. After SHU made it 3-2, goals from Hannah Gutcher and Diaz swung the momentum back to the Mount with a 4-3 lead with 10:39 left in the opening half.

The Mount's advantage quickly disappeared with the Pioneers notching the final three goals of the first half, including one just 32 seconds after Diaz's strike, to take a 6-4 halftime lead. SHU's Caitlin Delaney led her team with three goals, including two in the opening 30 minutes.

Sammie Knapp's early second-half goal cut the Mount's deficit to 6-5, but the Pioneers stretched their lead to 8-5 with goals from Jenna Lijeberg and Delaney.

The Mount was able to storm back with the game's next three goals to put the score at 8-8 with 13:25 remaining. Maloney started the run on a goal off a Gutcher assist followed by tallies from McGann and Diaz.

Shelby Vaccaro found the back of the net for the Pioneers with 5:11 on the clock for a 9-8 lead. After a Mount turnover with just over two minutes left, SHU had a chance to hold the ball and run out the clock. The Mount pressured the Pioneers with Diaz causing a turnover to get the ball back with 1:38 left. The visitors called a timeout, setting up the final play of regulation with Diaz recording the game-tying goal.

After no goals in the first overtime, Maloney scored on the Mount's fourth shot of the second overtime for the road victory.

Turning in a complete performance, Diaz led the Mount with four caused turnovers, and tied for the team lead with three ground balls and three draw controls. The Mountaineers outshot the Pioneers, 28-21, with goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski making seven saves. Kelly Keenan stopped eight shots for Sacred Heart, which held a 19-13 edge in ground balls.

The Mount plays again on Sunday, April 13, at LIU Brooklyn. The first draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
