Mount Women's Lacrosse Falls to American, 11-9

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 5, 2014) – A second-half comeback fell short as the Mount women's lacrosse team lost to American, 11-9, at Waldron Family Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Kelly Maloney notched the second multi-goal game of her career with a game-high four goals for the Mount.

The Mount (1-3) trailed American (2-4) by six at 11-5 early in the second half before reeling off four goals in a row to cut the deficit to 11-9 with 12:28 remaining. The Mount managed two more shots down the stretch, but Erin Seipp hit the post and Lindsay Diaz's shot was saved.

Diaz, who also recorded a hat trick on the day, scored the game's first goal in the opening minute. After Jamie Silverman responded on the other end to even the score at 1-1, Maloney converted a free position to give the Mount a 2-1 edge with 21:34 to play.

American scored three in a row, and it was Maloney who answered for the Mount with her second on the day off an assist from Hannah Gutcher.

The lead grew to 6-3 before a shot off the stick of Sammie Knapp put the score at 6-4. Consecutive strikes from AU's Alex Lugovina were proceeded by Maloney's second free position goal and third overall in the game. The Eagles scored twice in the final three minutes, including one as the first-half clock expired, to give American a 10-5 halftime edge.

Lugovina, who scored a team-high three goals, scored a free position with 2:26 gone in the second half before the Mount went on its 4-0 run. Diaz netted two second-half goals, while Maloney and Gutcher racked up one apiece for the Mountaineers in the final 30 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski picked up her second game with double-digit saves with 14 on Wednesday. The Mount was outshot in the opening half, 31-6, but improved in the second half with nine shots to American's five.

Diaz put together a complete game for the Mount with a team-best four ground balls, two draw controls and a game-high three caused turnovers. Wednesday marked the second game this season the Mount has had two players record multi-goal games.

The Mount plays again at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. versus George Mason.
