Mount Women's Lacrosse Stumbles at Duquesne

Pittsburgh (March 23, 2014) – Erin Seipp's third multi-goal game of the season with three tallies on Sunday was not enough to carry the Mount women's lacrosse team to victory in an 18-5 road loss at Duquesne in non-conference action.

Seniors Bridget McGann and Aubrey Rubino also scored goals for the Mount (1-7), which was outshot by a 34-19 margin by the Dukes (7-1) on the afternoon. The Mountaineers won the draw control battle with 13 to Duquesne's 11, but was plagued by 21 turnovers.

Caitlin Prince scored all five of her goals in the first half, while Haley Marafioti and Amanda Kidder added hat tricks for Duquesne.

After the Dukes got the scoring going with a strike from Lib Lowry 20 seconds into the contest, Seipp pulled the Mount even at 1-1 with 26:09 left in the opening half. Two more goals from Duquesne put the Mount in a 3-1 hole 10 minutes into the game.

Another Mount goal off the stick of McGann trimmed the Mount's deficit to just 3-2 with 19:32 remaining before half, but Duquesne answered with three-consecutive goals in a span of 2:13 for a 6-2 advantage.

Seipp's second goal of the day put the score at 6-3 before Duquesne rattled off five goals in a row heading into halftime to take a commanding 11-3 lead through 30 minutes.

The Dukes continued its offensive push early in the second half with six-consecutive goals to cap an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach with the Mount trailing 17-3 with 13:53 left.

The Mountaineers continued to fight until the final whistle with Rubino and Seipp recording goals in the final 2:30 of the game.

Lindsay Diaz led the Mount with four draw controls, while Sammie Knapp corralled three on the day. Goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski posted nine saves for the Mount, and Kristen Gregory made five saves in 46:20 of action before Jenna Bishop finished up with two saves in goal for the Dukes, which scored five of their goals on free position attempts on Sunday.

The Mount concludes non-conference play with a home game versus Columbia at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday, March 30, at noon.
