Emmitsburg, Md. (March 15, 2014) – In a match that came down to the wire, the Mount men's tennis team lost in a heartbreaker to Saint Francis U by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday in the first Northeast Conference match for the Mount this season.
Mount St. Mary's (6-6, 0-1 NEC) was down to SFU (4-6, 2-1 NEC), 1-0 entering singles play after the Red Flash took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Mount's No. 3 tandem of Austin Blake and Mike Zabetakis were 8-5 winners over SFU's Eli Cerdan and Kyle Korus.
Moving on to singles play, Blake was again victorious, this time beating Rodrigo Tico by scores of 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
Mateo DeSomocurcio continued his strong play with a three-set victory at No. 3. The freshman won the first set, 6-3, and after Cerdan's second-set win, DeSomocurcio took the third set, 6-4 for the win. Fellow freshman Darren Mast cruised to his No. 6 singles win, 6-1, 6-3, to pick up another point for the home side.
Tomorrow, the Mount plays another NEC match versus Robert Morris at home at 11 a.m.
