Orlando, Fla. (February 24, 2014) – Playing its second match in two days, the Mount men's tennis team lost to Palm Beach Atlantic, 5-2, on Monday afternoon. Freshman Mateo DeSomocurcio was part of a winning No. 3 doubles pairing and also won his No. 4 singles match on the day.
The Mount (3-4) fell in two out of three doubles matches before the Sailfish (3-3) won four of six singles matches.
At No. 3 doubles, DeSomocurcio teamed with fellow freshman Louis Tonon for an 8-6 victory. Palm Beach Atlantic took No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the point moving to singles.
DeSomocurcio also turned in a winning effort at No. 4 singles, beating Asti Adams, 7-6, 6-2. Senior Mike Zabetakis earned the Mount's other point on the day thanks to a straight-set 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. The Sailfish won in straight sets at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. In the most highly-contested match of the day, freshman Darren Mast split the first two sets at No. 6 singles with Matt Leeds before falling in the third-set tiebreaker.
Tomorrow, the Mount continues its spring break with a 2 p.m. match versus Bethune-Cookman.
