MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount looks for its first win of the young season with a road game at Lehigh on Saturday, Feb. 22. Playing on the road for the first time in 2014, the Mountaineers are taking on the Mountain Hawks for the seventh-time in program history. The Mount brought back eight starters from last year's NEC Playoff team, including 2014 captains Erin Seipp, Hannah Gutcher and Gabe Little.
LAST TIME OUT: The Mount was handed a 17-2 defeat by Johns Hopkins in the season opener at home at Waldron Family Stadium on Feb. 19. In the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Steph Rurkowski made a career-best 16 saves in her first start for the Mountaineers. Offensively, Hannah Gutcher and Lindsay Diaz both scored goals in the first half.
ABOUT LEHIGH: The Mountain Hawks had their season opener versus Wagner postponed twice, making Saturday's game versus Mount the 2014 debut for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks, which went 4-12 last season, including a 1-5 mark in the Patriot League, welcome back three players who scored at least 11 goals in 2013. Second Team All-Patriot League selection Carli Sukonik was second on the team with 25 goals a season ago.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LEHIGH: Mount St. Mary's is 2-4 versus Lehigh in the all-time series, which dates back to 2003. In games in Bethlehem, Pa., the Mount is 1-3. The Mount won two of the first three meetings against the Mountain Hawks but have lost three in a row and have not beaten Lehigh since 2005.
ON THE ROAD: In 11 road games last season, the Mount went 2-9 with wins over Saint Francis U and Central Connecticut State. Since Head Coach B.J. Johnson took over before the start of the 2011 season, the Mount is 10-21 in road games.
MOUNT VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE: The Mount is 4-17 versus teams that currently make up the Patriot League. The Mount has two wins over both American and Lehigh in program history.
TOP PLAYERS BACK: Mount St. Mary's is the only Northeast Conference team in 2014 that has two returning First Team All-NEC selections from a season ago. Lindsay Diaz and Gabe Little earned a spot on the NEC's First Team as juniors in 2013. Diaz is the Mount's active scoring leader with 51 career goals, while Little finished sixth in the nation with 56 ground balls a year ago.
YOUNG STARTERS: A trio of freshmen, Kelly Maloney, Sammie Knapp and Maddy Bandomer, all started their first games for the Mount versus Johns Hopkins. Three other freshmen in Alex Carhart, Jackie Howard and Lauren Schneider also saw action in the team's opening game.
UP NEXT: The Mount plays at Delaware State on Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m.
