Mount Women's Lacrosse Prepares for 2014 Opener Versus Johns Hopkins

ABOUT THE MOUNT: The Mount begins its 19th season of women's lacrosse with the 2014 opener against Johns Hopkins on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. A year after qualifying for the NEC Tournament for the 11th-consecutive season, the Mount brings back 16 letterwinners, including eight starters. Head Coach B.J. Johnson begins her fourth season at the Mount with two trips to the NEC Championship game already to her credit.

ABOUT JOHNS HOPKINS: The Blue Jays crushed Marquette, 16-2, in their season debut on Feb. 15. Johns Hopkins, which went 10-7 last season, returns its top six scorers, including 43-goal scorer Sarah Taylor.

LAST TIME VS. JOHNS HOPKINS: Last season in an 18-5 loss at Johns Hopkins, Megan Gluck netted a hat trick and Kaitlyn Larrimore scored two goals for the Mount. Defensively, Sarah Jane Leder made a career-high 22 saves between the pipes.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. JOHNS HOPKINS: The Mount has not beaten Johns Hopkins in 10 all-time meetings dating back to the 1997 season. The Mount is 0-4 against the Blue Jays in Emmitsburg.

SEASON OPENERS: The Mount is 4-14 in season openers in school history. The program's last win to begin a season was a 14-9 road victory over Howard on March 1, 2001. A win over Johns Hopkins would snap a 12-game losing streak on opening day.

TOP PLAYERS BACK: Mount St. Mary's is the only Northeast Conference team in 2014 that has two returning First Team All-NEC selections from a season ago. Lindsay Diaz and Gabe Little earned a spot on the NEC's First Team as juniors in 2013.

NEC PRESEASON POLL: The Mount received two first-place votes and was selected to finish second in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. Bryant picked up the remaining six top votes to be named the preseason favorite in the eight-team league.

COACHING STAFF: Head Coach B.J. Johnson returns for her fourth season at the Mount, having qualified for the NEC Tournament in each of her first three years. Johnson welcomes back second year coach Dana Cahill as an assistant and adds two-time Tewaaraton Award winner Katie Schwarzmann as well as All-CAA defender Alexandra Burns to the staff.

UP NEXT: The Mount plays on the road for the first time this season with a 1 p.m. game against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday, Feb. 22.
