Mount St. Mary's Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season This Weekend

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount kicks off the spring portion of its schedule with weekend matches against Howard and Lehigh. In the fall, the Mountaineers went 2-1 with wins over Shepherd and Rider to go with strong outings at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational and the George Mason Invitational. Peter Salomon and Austin Blake lead the Mountaineers in singles play with five and four victories, respectively.

SPRING OPENERS: Now in his 10th season at the Mount, Head Coach Phil Hammond's teams are 2-7 in spring openers on the men's side with the Mountaineers.  The Mount defeated Howard, 7-0, to begin the spring last year.

ABOUT HOWARD: The Bison are 0-4 on the season with losses to Old Dominion, North Carolina, Delaware and William & Mary. The young Howard team is made up of four freshmen and three sophomores. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. HOWARD: Since moving to Division I in 1988-89, the Mount is 7-8 versus Howard. The Mountaineers have won three of the last four in the series, including a 7-0 win last spring. 

ABOUT LEHIGH: The Mountain Hawks won their first four matches of the spring before dropping a 7-0 decision to Penn State last time out on Feb. 9. Among Lehigh's victories are Northeast Conference competitors Saint Francis U and Fairleigh Dickinson. The reigning Patriot League Champions are led by second-year head coach Wouter Hendrix. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LEHIGH: The Mount has never beaten Lehigh in 11 all-time meetings. The two sides have squared off each of the past six seasons, all in Bethlehem, Pa. 

NEW TO THE MOUNT: Freshman Mateo DeSomocurcio joined the Mount men's tennis team for the spring semester. The Lima, Peru native had a decorated career prior to enrolling at the Mount with a top 800 ITF ranking with several wins over top 500 ITF players.

UP NEXT: The Mount heads to Florida to play five matches between Feb. 23 and Feb. 28.
