UPDATED BRACKET
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 4, 2014) – Sophomore standout Mateo DeSomocurcio advanced to the finals of the Flight A singles bracket to highlight the Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team's efforts at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Saturday.
After Friday's action was rained out, competitors from the Mount, Loyola, Howard, Gettysburg and Dickinson played two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Saturday. In addition to DeSomocurcio's solid day, Darren Mast (Flight B), Brandon Wortkotter (Flight C) and Peter Salomon (Flight D) all reached the finals of their respective singles flights.
DeSomocurcio cruised to a straight-set 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dickinson's Clark Chapman in the opening round of Flight A singles and battled his way to a 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) win against Ismael Kaouache of Howard in the semifinals. DeSomocurcio will square off with Howard's William Jones in tomorrow's final.
In a back-and-forth match, Mast downed Brett Shriver of Loyola in the first round of Flight B by scores of 4-6, 6-2, (10-5) before making quick work of Gettysburg's Wesley Craft, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals. Wortkotter also added a pair of singles wins in Flight C action with wins over Harrison Kunkel of Loyola and Christian Deschapelles of Gettysburg.
Competing in Flight D singles, junior Peter Salomon pieced together a 2-0 day thanks to straight-set victories over Gettysburg's Kevin DeRosa and Loyola's Matthew Bejian.
In Flight A doubles action, Wortkotter and Blake paired up for an 8-2 victory over Wiley Vehslage and Devin McVeigh from Gettysburg. Mast and Louis Tonon added an 8-5 win over Owens and Kendall of Howard.
Play will conclude tomorrow with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
